Haemonchus contortus:
A blood-feeding roundworm and one of the most economically damaging parasites in sheep and goats worldwide.
Haemonchus contortus eggs are visually indistinguishable from other strongyle eggs under standard microscopy
— meaning a routine FEC alone cannot 昀氀ag its presence.
Why speciation matters
Haemonchus contortus can cause severe blood loss, anaemia and sudden death, sometimes with
only a moderate rise in total strongyle count.
It can resume development from overwintering larvae, catching 昀氀ocks off guard outside the
expected risk period.
Traditional differentiation (peanut agglutinin/PNA staining) is lab-based and adds turnaround time.
